DAY 17

Hi All,

We have ended our long stretch of the Oregon Coast. There are some interesting facts about Oregon, such as they won't let you pump your own gas and they have no sales tax.
Some funny signs we saw were Bonk and Bonk Investigation, Stack 'em Deep sell 'em cheap Crazy Craig's fine cars.
We passed through Humptulip and passed by Humbug Mountain and by Hoopla Lane.

Today we head to Olympia National Park and right off the bat we spot this coyote.

We enter the Quinault Rain Forest.
Here is the largest Douglas-fir tree in the state of Washington. Estimated at 900 years old and standing over 300 feet tall.

This is a nurse log. Trees fallen will nurse small trees to grow right over them.

Everything grows really big here.

Why shouldn't they with a 145 inches of rain a year. That's over 12 feet.

This tree is growing right on this stump.

We are here in one of the few days out of the year that it's not raining.

Moss is all over everything.

We stumble upon this beautiful waterfall.

We head down the road and come upon a grove of trees that have big balls on them.
We find out they are called spruce burls.

Some get real big.

We move on to the Hoh Rain Forest where we find the largest cedar tree in Washington.

These are the only rain forests in the continental US.

We couldn't ask for a better day.

Wind knocked a lot of these trees down. Some of the logs are 150-200 feet long.

As we leave we see even the phone has a moss covering.

We land in Port Angeles and will explore more of the park tomorrow.
See you then.
