Cozumel Mexico
Thursday Day 5
Welcome to Cozumel Mexico !
Our journey for today is to explore the Mayan Ruins of Tulum.
...
As most of you know Cozumel is an island.
It's about a 25 mile ferry ride to the mainland.
Now we take a bus ride to get to the site.
You look around and realize how good we have it.
Now a short tram ride. Are we there yet?
The city of Tulum built about 2-3 thousand years before Christ.
The Mayans had enemies, so the whole city has a wall around it.
This is one of many guard towers.
Over looking the city.
The Mayans were great astrologers. The whole city is set up in line with our solar system.
They could tell what day it was, by when the sun shone through a certain window.
These iguanas are found all over the place down here.
They are a food source. They say to catch them you need two people,
One to climb the tree and one to catch them when they jump out.
They say they taste like chicken. Their tail was used as an aphrodisiac.
This was their gateway to the ocean.
Looks like a nice place for a house to me.
The main temple.
We read that the Mayans had disappeared, but this is not true.
They decendents are still living here today.
One of them is our guide Tony.
Bill and Gwyn are starting to realize the advantages of traveling with us.
It never rains and the weather is always perfect.
It doesn't get much nicer than this.
..
To think what these people had to work with as far as their tools.
Having no knowledge of metal or the wheel, to be able to build a city
that would last for centuries is outstanding.
Fare well to Tulum
Back to the boat.
Another day in paradise !
